‘You never told me he was that good,’ cried Eric Clapton, the God of the guitar after a gig with the then not-very-popular Jimi Hendrix. James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix flew from New York to London with his manager, at just 24 years of age, to look for some work as a guitarist. At a Cream concert, he requested if he could play with Clapton and somehow that dream materialized. After that impressive performance, Hendrix was befriended by Clapton. But just four years later, he died as a result of a lethal combination of alcohol and pills. During those four years he created music that changed rock music forever. Here are seven of his most memorable quotes.

Number Seven: “If I’m free, it’s because I’m always running.”- Jimi Hendrix

Jimi asks everyone chasing freedom to follow this. Keep working hard to chase your dreams and soon you will accomplish them, one after the other. Being greedy for dreams coming true is not a bad thing.

Number Six: “I will be dead in five years’ time, but while I am here, I will travel many highways and I will, of necessity, die at a time when my message of love, peace, and freedom can be shared with people all over the world.” – Jimi Hendrix

He couldn’t be more right. His music is eternal and the revolution he brought still lingers. He would be 70 today if he were still alive, and we would have had decades worth of more incredible music.

Number Five: “I used to live in a room full of mirrors; all I could see was me. I take my spirit and I crash my mirrors, now the whole world is here for me to see.” – Jimi Hendrix

Jimi wants you break your own barriers. You need to come out of your shell and face the world, in all its glory and all the fears it can scare you with.

Number Four:  “Music is stronger than politics. I feel sorry for the minorities, but I don’t feel a part of one.” – Jimi Hendrix

This goes out to all the minorities in the world. If you are talented in any art or craft, then you will be appreciated. Art does not know any boundaries. How can color or race be any hindrance?

Number Three: “I’m the one that has to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life, the way I want to.” – Jimi Hendrix

It’s almost believable that Jimi knew he would die a young death, and that is why he wanted to live freely and to its fullest. It should tell us a thing or two about not taking life so seriously and going for what our heart wants.

Number Two: “Music is my religion.” – Jimi Hendrix

Jimi did give it his all. His music was followed by millions and continue to inspire so many. No wonder he had a spiritual connection to it which was much stronger than any bond.

Number One: “Excuse me while I kiss the sky.” – Jimi Hendrix

In the short life he lived, he did touch the sky along with the hearts of so many of his fans. The legend lives on in his songs and in his memory.
